Security Concept for Shipyards: Ö-varvet
How can a historic shipyard with multiple buildings and workshops implement a modern, integrated security concept?
Ö-varvet, a shipyard operating since 1916, had developed a grown infrastructure over the years—multiple workshops, halls, and buildings. Several independent security systems were in place side by side: access control, intrusion alarm, and fire protection were not connected.
The head of security describes the situation as a significant challenge with high requirements: customers from different areas of the maritime industry set strict expectations regarding safety and operational procedures.
In cooperation with Monitor Larm and Aras Security, a modular security concept was implemented that connects all areas of the shipyard within one unified system.
Interview with Head of Security about the Security Solution
Insights from the Head of Security
Challenges
- Integration into existing building structures
- Parallel operation of several security systems
- High requirements for fire and intrusion protection
- Complex logistics for access rights (gates, halls, workshops)
Initial Situation
- Multiple buildings and workshops across the shipyard site
- Existing alarm systems and access control without central management
- Different security-relevant areas with high requirements
- Need for a unified platform for security and logistics
Security Solution for the Shipyard
Ö-varvet wanted to combine all security-relevant functions into a single system. The Head of Security explains that Monitor Larm solved all issues that arose during the project. Today, door and gate control, intrusion alarm, and fire alarm are managed through a central platform.
Results
- Centralization: all security functions in one system
- Transparency: clear management of doors, gates, and alarm areas
- Safety: combination of access control, intrusion, and fire alarm
- Integration: open interfaces for existing systems
Conclusion
Ö-varvet demonstrates how a historically developed site can implement a modern security concept without interrupting ongoing operations.
By integrating all relevant security functions into a single system, the shipyard gains efficiency and transparency. Open interfaces enable the continued use of existing technology and gradual expansion over time.
